Assign License Bundles from File

If you want to directly assign a license bundle to numerous user accounts or groups, you can avoid assigning them to the license bundle manually by using the Import License Assignees method available for each license bundle. This makes it easy for you to download the users in your Azure AD and then upload that file, with modifications as needed, to license bundles.

The workflow supports assigning accounts, people and groups object types to license bundles and takes as input a delimited CSV file with a list of either Account LogonName, Person Email or Group LogonName.

If Importing a list of accounts, the header and account row should look like

If importing a list of people, the header and person row should look like

If importing a list of groups, the header and group row should look like

If you download users in your Azure AD, the only field needed is userPrincipalName. Change the name of this field to LogonName when importing the file.

This method takes in a delimited flat file with the first row containing the required field name for the object type as mentioned above. Once the flat file is uploaded and submitted, all accounts in the file are processed by the Fulfillment Queue and granted licenses in Azure by being added to the appropriate license fulfillment group.

To add assignees to license bundles, you need to have one of the following Management Roles:

  • License Admin for All Pools and Bundles

  • License Manager for All Bundles

  • License Manager for Bundles Where Owner

How to assign license bundles from file

  1. On the navbar, expand Azure License Manager and select Manage Assignments.

  2. Select the License Bundles tab and search for license bundle to which you want to add the assignee.

  3. Click the License Bundle link for the target bundle.

  4. On the General tab of the License Bundle Details page, click the License Assignees accordion to expand it and then click Import License Assignees.

This initiates the Assign License Bundle From File workflow.

  5. In the workflow form, type the field delimiter for the flat file in the Delimiter field. Comma is the default.

  6. Click Browse and select the file with the user accounts you wish to assign to the license bundle.

Once you have selected a file, the Browse button is replaced with "File is Selected" text and the Load CSV button becomes active.

  7. Click the Load CSV button.

The form updates to display the data in the flat file. The column headers are shown in the text above the drop-downs, while the records are shown in the grid.

  8. Click Submit.

License assignments are processed by the Fulfillment Queue, which is a Daemon job that runs in the background. Once the Fulfillment Queue grabs the assignments, you can view the process status in the Fulfillment Queue Accordion of the Fulfillment tab on this page. From start to finish, it takes the queue approximately 10 minutes to complete license assignments.
